the GAma mission

The GAMA Mission represents ASC’s most recent and capable effort at launch vehicle operations, marking a significant step forward for Portugal’s space industry.

With support from the Portuguese Space Agency and the European Space Agency (ESA) through the Boost! program, ASC leveraged its newly acquired capabilities to successfully launch two atmospheric rockets.

These supersonic, solid-fuel rockets were launched by ASC from Malbusca, on the island of Santa Maria—the very site where ASC envisions establishing its orbital launch center.

Although the rockets remained within the troposphere, the GAMA Mission provided a vital opportunity to test systems, gain operational experience, and strengthen the team’s expertise, paving the way for future launches.

While manufactured by the ASC, the two Gama rockets launched were designed and developed in partnership with Rocket Experiment Division, a team of university students from Instituto Superior Técnico. Find out more about them here.

Collaboration with local authorities

The success of the GAMA Mission was made possible through close collaboration with local and national authorities, who were vital in ensuring a safe range and a well-coordinated operation. ASC is also deeply grateful to Incuba+, our base of operations on Santa Maria, for providing workspace and logistical support during the mission.
