ASC Demonstrates Launch Capability From Santa Maria

In a clear demonstration of the growing ambition and national capacity of the Portuguese Space sector, Portugal witnessed yesterday the first launch of an atmospheric rocket from the Santa Maria Island, in the Azores, Portugal.

The first launch occurred at 13:04 UTC+00, from the Malbusca site, and constitutes a significant milestone in the creation of a commercially Open Spaceport in Portugal.

The launch from Portuguese soil, unprecedented given the specifications of the rocket, highlights ASC’s capacity to foster and manage complex space missions. Besides the technological achievement, this milestone represents a critical step towards the creation of a solid regulatory and operational framework.

At 11h49 UTC+00, on the 28th of September 2024, a second GAMA rocket was launched from Malbusca, Santa Maria, Azores. This was the second GAMA rocket launched from our mobile platform within two days. Our GAMA mission, a double launch from Santa Maria was a success, although it was not perfect. But this is how we learn. More will come!
